NB Trauma Program pitches in First Dragon’s Den Style Event

On April 24, The NB Trauma Program was one of four teams to compete for the top prize of $75,000 at the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation’s Dragons’ Den-style fundraiser event.

Team members Dr. James French, Dr. Tushar Pishe and Ian Watson from the NB Trauma Program pitched a new mobile simulation-based learning program to the dragons. The mobile solution is for emergency care of major trauma patients in New Brunswick Trauma Centres, and will bring any required training equipment and faculty to various emergency departments. This allows real-life simulation opportunities for physicians, nurses and respiratory therapists within their usual work environments, using usual equipment and working with usual team members. Education is provided using high fidelity simulation mannequins and real paramedics and ambulance services.

Although not the grand prize winner, the NB Trauma Program was awarded the $25,000 Irving Oil Audience Choice Award. An additional $32,500 was raised from the audience at the event and will be generously matched by the Saint John Regional Foundation to further fund this simulation project.

The grand prize was awarded to Dr. Paul Atkinson, Dr. Jay Mekwan and Dr. Mark Tutschka, Bill O’Reilly and Dr. Mike Howlett for their project on “Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) in Emergency Care”.
