The Advanced Trauma Life Support® (ATLS®) program was developed by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and its Committee on Trauma (COT).
ATLS® was first introduced in the US and abroad in 1980. Its courses provide you with a safe and reliable method for immediate management of injured patients. The course teaches you how to assess a patient’s condition, resuscitate and stabilize them, and determine if their needs exceed a facility’s capacity. Inter hospital transfer and assurance of optimal patient care during transfer is also covered. An ATLS® course provides an easy method to remember for evaluation and treatment of a trauma victim.
ATLS® Benefits
- ATLS® presents a systematic and organized approach for evaluation and management of the seriously injured patient.
- ATLS® Provides physicians with a measurable, comprehensive, and reproducible system of trauma assessment and critical interventions for the patient with multiple injuries.
- ATLS® offers doctors, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners’ integral knowledge and skills that are essential for optimal patient management.
- ATLS® provides a foundation of common knowledge for all members of the trauma team and is applicable in both large urban centers and small rural emergency departments.
- The knowledge and skills acquired at the course are easily adapted to all situations.
ATLS® Objectives:
- Demonstrate the concepts and principles of the primary and secondary patient assessment.
- Establish management priorities in a trauma situation.
- Initiate primary and secondary management necessary within the golden hour for the emergency management of acute-life threatening conditions.
- Arrange appropriately for a patient’s interhospital or intrahospital transfer.
- Demonstrate skills often required in the initial assessment and treatment of patient with multiple injuries through simulated clinical and surgical skills practicum.

TNCC™
TNCC™ was developed by the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) for Registered Nurses to provide a comprehensive standardized approach for trauma patient care.
TNCC™
Trauma NB is offering priority placement to Registered Nurses (RN) working in New Brunswick Emergency Departments (ED) and Ambulance New Brunswick (ANB) Flight Nurses, as TNCC™ is a requirement for employment in these areas.
If there are seats available 8 weeks prior to the course date, registration will open to Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) working in NB EDs.
If there are still seats available 6 weeks prior to the course date, registration will be open to RNs working in departments other than the NB EDs.
Every second counts when caring for the critically injured!
TNCC™ prepares nurses with the knowledge, critical thinking skills and hands-on training needed to provide high-quality trauma nursing care. TNCC™ participants will learn how to properly assess and implement evidence-based interventions to improve outcomes for trauma patients. TNCC™ is designed for all nurses who care for injured patients: the new trauma nurses will acquire the essentials, while the experienced trauma nurses will update their skills and knowledge.
What you will learn in TNCC™ 9th Edition:
- The latest trauma nursing practice recommendations
- A systematic and standardized approach to trauma nursing care
- Rapid identification of life-threatening injuries
Trauma NB offers TNCC™ 9th Ed. Provider Courses as a 2-day, instructor-led in-person course. ENA has incorporated a variety of learning methodologies to meet the needs of every learning style, including: a provider manual, online modules, and instructor-led classroom discussion and skill stations. Interactive activities are interwoven throughout the classroom time. The pre-course learning modules include a step-by-step breakdown of the Trauma Nursing Process (TNP) and a comprehensive study guide.
Evaluation and Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) Contact Hours
Successful completion of the course includes scoring 80% or greater on the electronic open book multiple choice exam and demonstration of all critical steps, and 70% of the total points in the TNP Skill Station test.

Simulation
Trauma NB’s Mobile Simulation Program is an Accredited Simulation Activity (Section 3) through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
Simulation
Program Description
Trauma NB’s Mobile Simulation course is a dynamic interdisciplinary trauma-focused program. We bring simulation equipment to sites around the province, allowing learners to practice in their own region, with their own teams. The program offers pre-course reading and a full day of simulated cases. Limited didactic content is covered using a flipped classroom style, and simulations are debriefed in a highly collegial, reproducible and evidence-based way. You will leave the day more comfortable with learning by simulation, and with managing the specific clinical content covered.
Mobile Simulation registration fees:
- Physicians: $1450
- Non-Physicians: $90
Clinical Content
This full day of simulated major trauma cases primarily focuses on airway management during increasingly complex cases ranging from rapid sequence intubation in the stable and unstable patient to the indications for the ‘awake’ intubation and surgical airway. Participants will learn the value of deliberate practice and checklists as well as important principles of crisis resource management necessary for effective team functioning and communication.
