Trauma Registry

Trauma registries provide crucial information to understand patterns of injury provincially and to guide quality improvement, education, research and injury prevention strategies. They include information related to the injury event, patient demographics, the types and severity of injuries sustained in the event, the process of care (pre-hospital through discharge), and patient outcomes.

Trauma NB manages the NB Trauma Registry, and Horizon Health Network is the designated data custodian. We secured the required approvals for patient-level data to be collected in accordance with current legislation. These approvals recognize that the trauma registry contains only secondary clinical data – the patient’s chart always remains the primary health record for all patients. Our staff collect data from the clinical charts of injured patients who receive care at the provinces’ Level I, II and III trauma centres. The data is used to guide improvements in clinical care, to report on overall system performance and to develop meaningful injury prevention strategies.

We protect the information we are entrusted with. Multiple layers of protection ensure that the information we collect and store within the NB Trauma Registry remains secure. If you are interested in seeing any of our related policies, feel free to contact us at TraumaNB@HorizonNB.ca

In addition to holding data within the NB Trauma Registry, some data elements are promoted to New Brunswick Institute for Research, Data and Training (NB-IRDT). This allows researchers to link the prehospital and in-hospital care experience of major trauma patients that are in the NB Trauma Registry to other important databases such as Vital Statistics and the Discharge Abstract Database (DAD), all while protecting personal information.

Requests for information can always be submitted to TraumaNB@HorizonNB.ca. Researchers may also be interested in other support we provide.
